FYI Healthwise -- Winter Herb Use

by Rebecca of Heronter

Greetings Lords and Ladies,

Me thinks we've discovered Northern Ireland weather. I may have Irish blood in my veins, but it doesn't seem to aid in the ability to stay warm. In weather like this, it's important to fine tune the immune system.

Herbalism is a centuries old art..Science has only recently begun to verify age old healing traditions. Because herbalsim is an art, remedies are tailored to fit the individual. Exact formulas, dosages, or measurements are rare. A "one strength for all" mentality could lead to misuse of an herb with the potential of injury instead of healing. Please take note, with herbs, less is often more. Please start slowly, gently. You may easily increase a dosage if the effect you desire has not been achieved. It's much harder to control an adverse reaction than it is to tailor the remedy.

Siberian gingseng as well as shiitake mushrooms are adaptogenic herbs. They help keep the immune system running smoothly. When you're vulnerable, you need instant help, turn to garlic, thyme and echinacea.

Garlic is one of nature's most powerful medicinal plants, but current trends to use the odorless tablets are defeating it's abilities. The recommendation is to consume one teaspoon of crushed garlic a day. If one must resort to a garlic supplement, please chose a gel-cap that contains pure garlic oil for it is the oil that contains allicin which is anti-viral, anti-bacterial. This substance is released when the garlic is crushed.

Thyme, an all "thyme" favorite. (Sorry, grin) Thyme contains thymol. Another one of nature anti-viral, anti-bacterial wonders. It's great for colds and bronchitus. To make a tea , pour one cup of boiling water over 2 teaspoons of the herb, let it stand covered for 10 minutes, strain and enjoy. Drink one cup several times a day.

Echinacea increase the level of properdin in your body. Properdin activates the part of the immune system that increases the body's defense mechanism against viruses and bascterias. The dosage should equal 900 Milligrams of echinacea per day. When you feel a cold coming on, if you have a tincture, 15 to 25 drops three times a day is the recommended dosage. Otherwise, please pay attention to the strengths on the packages.

These are few pointers to begin the season with. Enjoy in good health.

In His Service,
Lady Rebekah
