FYI Healthwise -- Soybeans

by Rebecca of Heronter

A few of you have voiced an interest in soybeans. Centuries of use have given the world various uses of soybeans, including topically. One of the properties of soybeans is that of having a cooling effect on the body. Raw soybeans, soaked in water, crushed and applied to affected areas can help alleviate fever in tissue.

Another use of soybeans is miso. Miso is fermented soybean paste, used often in macrobiotic cooking for soup, condiments and seasoning. It also has many medicinal applications. A Miso plaster may be applied directly to the body if the area is red and irritated. Although miso is not recommended for puncture wounds and large ruptured areas, it is beneficial on cuts and can stop bleeding.

The salt in miso encourages the affected area to shrink. To avoid this, add half as much (50%) brown rice to the mixture. With the addition of the brown rice, the plaster enhances to include the properties of softening, as in the case of hard tumors. When applied for muscle tension or tissue tension, the area will become soft, smooth and flexible.

It is great for burns, including those incurred through radiation. The enzymes found in Miso neutralize most bacteria and help to prevent infection.

The miso plaster can draw out bee stingers, help neutralize itchy skin rashes and reduce any kind of swelling.

Caution should be used when applying miso. Because of it's strength, it is unwise to pack miso firmly on the skin. To do so could cause scarring of the tissue. One should gently cover the area with about 1/4 to 1/2 inch of plaster and cover with a single layer of cheesecloth. Leave on for one to two hours, longer if necessary. The plaster is effective until half dry.
