Calling all Vikings (and neighbors of Vikings)! It's time once again to set up our Viking Village at the Annual Jamestown Scandinavian Folk Festival. The Scandinavian Studies Program of Jamestown, New York has invited us back for their Fifth Annual Scandinavian Folk Festival. We have been asked to set up an as authentic as possible Viking encampment. This year the festival director has expressed the desire for a larger SCA presence at the festival. We would love to have as many people as possible join us in this celebration of all things Viking.
Site: Jamestown Community College Campus, 525 Falconer St., Jamestown, NY 14701 (See "Directions")
Cost: FREE to people in viking garb!
Date: July 28-30, 2006
Festival Hours: Friday 3:00 PM - 10:00 PM, Saturday 10:00 AM - 10:00 PM, and Sunday 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM. We have permission to camp overnights. The site is discreetly damp, above ground fires are permitted. Sorry, no pets.
Contact information: Lady Keinven Ragnarsdottir (Monica Mercer, 156 Howard St., Jamestown, NY, 14701, (716)450-9041, mmercer@stny.rr.com)The site is beautiful and we have lots of room. The area our village is set up is situated near the Leif Ericson Viking Ship and the Norwegian horses (live horses!). We have plenty of room for: Archery ; Armor; Beads; Camping; Drop spindles; Felting; Fingerloop Braiding; Heavy Fighting; Hnefatafl; Kube; Mead; Naalbinding; Spang; Thrown Weapons; Viking Accessories; Viking Age Personal Display; Viking Clothing; Viking Culture; Viking Food; Viking Jewelry; Viking Languages; Viking Shoes; Viking Skalds; Viking Textiles; and Wood Chip Carving. Many people who attend the festival come to see the Scandinavian crafts and take lessons. There will be a large arts/craft tent that will have displays, demonstrations, and classes. Many of the arts are fiber orientated. Would anyone be interested in demonstrating a skill in the craft tent during the weekend?
The festival will be setting up a large pavillion for us for displays and craft demos in addition to our village. Last year we demo'd Kubb games, thrown weapons and archery. Currently we will have thrown weapons, Kube, and Hnefatafl in addition to Viking age displays. We would like to have heavy weapons and archery provided we have marshals and participants. Hopefully, we will be able to set up competitions with the Viking Ship folks.
This year the festival organizers have suggested that the festival could be a larger venue for the SCA. (Our former seneschal joined us because of this demo!) So the more Vikings we have the better! Please share the word with your fellow Vikings. Our location within the festival has a good vantage point to the entire festival, so we get lots of people coming through. If you wish to merchant, please contact us; Viking goods only, please. To encourage SCA vendors of Viking related goods to attend the Jamestown Scandinavian Festival the festival director has offered to waive merchant fees this year. There is talk of grandfathering this waiver in for future festivals but this isnt decided just yet. They also ask if merchants would be willing to donate something to their raffle.
If you are planning to attend, please contact Keinven (Monica Mercer) and let her know whether you will be day-tripping or camping and what you can bring. Where will you be coming from? Do you have a Viking tent? Would you need crash space? What kinds of Viking stuff do you do?
